Tracking coherent structures in a regional ocean model with wavelet analysis: Application to Cape Basin eddies
نویسندگان
چکیده
[1] This study is mainly aimed at proposing objective tools for the identification and tracking of three-dimensional eddy structures. It is conducted with a high-resolution numerical model of the ocean region around South Africa, and emphasis is put on Cape Basin anticyclones and cyclones thought to be actively implicated in the Indian-Atlantic interocean exchange. We settle on wavelet analysis for the decomposition and processing of successive maps of relative vorticity for a simulation run with 1 10 resolution. The identification of three-dimensional coherent structures comes with the calculation of eddy trajectories and the time evolution of eddy properties. Instantaneous mass transport and momentum of eddies are calculated from the knowledge of instantaneous drift velocities, volumes, and diameters. The success of the regional model and of the analysis technique is assessed through comparisons with equivalent observations.

Ocean gliders constitute an important advance in the highly demanding ocean monitoring scenario. Their efficiency, endurance and increasing robustness make these vehicles an ideal observing platform for many long term oceanographic applications [1]. The transfer of upper kilometer water from the Indian Ocean into the South Atlantic, the Agulhas leakage, is believed to be accomplished primarily through meso-scale eddy processes. There have been various studies investigating eddies of the ‘‘Cape Basin Cauldron’’ from specific data sets. The hydrographic data archive acquired during the last century within the Cape Basin region of the South A...

[1] The Indian Ocean water that ends up in the Atlantic Ocean detaches from the Agulhas Current retroflection predominantly in the form of Agulhas rings and cyclones. Using numerical Lagrangian float trajectories in a high‐resolution numerical ocean model, the fate of coherent structures near the Agulhas Current retroflection is investigated. It is shown that within the Agulhas Current, upstrea...
متن کاملA New Approach to Ocean Eddy Detection, Tracking, and Event Visualization-Application to The Northwest Pacific Ocean
High-resolution ocean general circulation models have advanced the numerical study of ocean eddies. To gain an understanding of ocean eddies from the large volume of data produced by simulations, visualizing just the distribution of eddies at each time step is insufficient; timevariations in eddy events and phenomena must also be considered. However, existing methods cannot accurately detect an...
